Muller: \\ »This edition of Abbé Prevost's Histoire des voyages is generally stated to be simply a reprint of the text of the Paris edition, with some new voyages added; but there is a great difference. It contains considerable corrections and additions. The first 9 vols., which contain the translation of the 4 vols. of Green's collection, have been carefully revised upon the original English, so that Mr. Green himself declares them preferable to the Paris edition; he says in the preface to vol. IV of the English original:\\ „The reputation of the work must have suffered in some measure by the Paris impression , if Mr. P. de Houdt at the Hague had not determined to publish a compleat translation of it, wherein are marked, with great exactness, all the omissions, additions and mistranslations to be found in Abbé Prevost's edition ... " Also the following vols. 10 to 25 are not a mere reprint of Prevost's Paris edition. In the preface to the 10th vol. (the first published after the English edition was suspended) we find it noticed, that the Dutch editor P. de Hondt, who seems to have been on a friendly footing with Mr. Green, had obtained the latter's assistence for correcting and revising the Paris edition, and he asserts in a somewhat bombastic manner, that these corrections amount to milliards. At all events, we may be sure that Mr. Green's corrections must have been of importance. Some parts are entirely new, for instance the Dutch voyages to East-India in the 17th volume; these are not in the edition of Paris. The plates and maps of de Hondt's edition are likewise partly new, or bear at least considerable corrections; most of them are due to the well-known engraver J. van der Schley. From all this will be seen, that de Hondt's edition is far preferable to the original issue.\\ At the same time with the French edition, de Hondt published a Dutch translation of it (see the following No.) He says that it is translated directly from the English, but it contains no new ameliorations, which are not in the French edition. It is published in 21 vols. in-4to, but does not contain all the matter of the French edition; only the first 17 vols. of this latter have been translated into Dutch. The last vol. of the Dutch translation contains a general index for the 21 vols.\\ It is to be regretted that the last 8 vols. of the French have not been published in Dutch, as they are just of special interest. Vol. 18-23 contain a complete history of all remarkable voyages to America from Columbus down to the time of the publication of the work, while the last two volumes are filled with the account of the voyages to the Nort , Greenland, Nova-Zembla, Jan Mayen Island, Kamtchatka, etc.«
